Faux wood blinds are appealing to many homeowners in South Carolina for a multitude of reasons. Not only do they withstand the high humidity, but they’re also one of the most versatile window treatments available. In this short post we hope to provide you with approximate price ranges for these window blinds and address the surcharges that come along with some common customizations.
What Are Faux Wood Blinds?
Blinds, sometimes called venetian blinds, are the utility window covering. With their slat tilt capability, they can provide everything from total privacy to nearly total view while lowered. The faux wood blind provides durability and great pricing, which can make it a better fit than a wood blind depending on your needs. Easily paired with curtains, new custom blinds elevate the aesthetic of your space.

How Can I Customize My Faux Wood Blinds?
Color: The four manufacturers we selected have a variety of colors that fall into the base price ranges listed above. Norman is the only company of the four that also offers “printed” colors for a 20% surcharge. These printed colors look like wood grain.
Slat Size: Faux Wood Blinds are typically offered in 2” or 2.5” slats. Although the slat size does not affect the base cost of a blind for Norman, Alta, and Lafayette, Hunter Douglas does have separate, higher pricing for the 2 ½” slats.
Texture: Faux wood blinds come in two textures - smooth and embossed. The embossed finish is meant to look like a wood blind. This does not directly affect the price. Norman’s most cost effective option comes only in the embossed finish.
Valance/Cornice: Hunter Douglas, Alta, and Lafayette all provide a valance with their base model, while Norman advertises their sleek, valance-free headrail for some of their blinds. Some brands offer a stand-alone window valance, but this is a separate product with a price tag of around $50 - $100 for a 36” wide window.
Specialty Shape: Your window might be an unusual shape, have an angle at the top, or you may be looking to add blinds to your glass door. Manufacturers like Hunter Douglas and Lafayette can accommodate you, but the surcharge can be significant depending on the shape, ranging from $300 - $1,100 for a 36” wide specialty window.
Lift System (Cordless): Most models of faux wood blinds come standard as cordless for a more streamlined appearance and for child safety. However, some do charge for the cordless system with prices around $100 - $150 per blind.
Motorization: With a price range of $300 - $800 per blind, you can find the system that fits your needs. These motors will not lift the blind, but will provide automatic tilting of the slats to adjust the amount of light.
Decorative Tape: Decorative tape is a fashionable way to hide the ladder cords that hold your blind together. Available in all sorts of colors and patterns, you can use this designer fabric to create bold contrasts or subtly blend in with the color of the wood. This stylistic flare is an extra $50 - $100 per blind.
When researching which blinds to choose to finish off your space, faux window blinds are well worth your consideration. These window treatments can give you complete privacy, an unobstructed view, and everything in between. Depending on which manufacturer you choose, they can also provide significant room darkening and blackout effects. Making these decisions for your home is a lot of work, but worth it. We hope that this walkthrough was helpful to you as you think through the many factors involved.
